Dr. Wingo Joins Arizona Oncology as Valley’s First Female Gynecologic Oncologist

PHOENIX—Shana Wingo, M.D. recently joined Arizona Oncology, becoming the Valley’s first female gynecologic oncologist. She is one of fewer than 1,000 gynecologic oncologists in the United States who specifically treats cervical, endometrial, ovarian, uterine and vulvar cancer. Arizona Oncology, which treats more patients with cancer than any other healthcare provider in the state, includes seven gynecologic oncologists, four of whom practice in the Phoenix metropolitan area and also serve Northern Arizona. Dr. Wingo performs surgeries at Phoenix Baptist Hospital and Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and Arizona Oncology’s other gynecologic oncologists serve at Scottsdale Healthcare Thompson Peak and at Banner Desert Medical Center.  Dr. Wingo earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and continued there to complete an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency, as well as a Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship. She is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in OB/GYN and is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Wingo has published on a variety of gynecologic malignancies with an emphasis on cervical cancer.

Dr. Wingo and her colleagues at Arizona Oncology, provide advanced and comprehensive gynecologic cancer care as part of the Arizona Oncology network. This network is affiliated with US Oncology, giving patients access to the latest treatments, inhouse laboratory services, chemotherapy and radiation, a staff pharmacist, state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge nationwide research and clinical trials. The US Oncology Research Network has played a role in the development of 42 cancer-fighting drugs approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

According to the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, women diagnosed with a reproductive cancer, especially ovarian and uterine (endometrial) cancers, experience improved outcomes when treated first by a gynecologic oncologist. Gynecologic oncologists’ advanced surgical skills, coupled with targeted and personalized chemotherapy, aggressive surgery and access to clinical trials ensure the best chance of survival. “Gynecologic cancers and related treatments make a significant impact in nearly every area of a woman’s life,” said Dr. Wingo. “Therefore, I strive to balance my clinical expertise with compassion, respect and emotional support for my patients and their family members.”

Arizona Oncology’s gynecologic oncologists perform minimally invasive surgeries using the da Vinci® Robot-assisted Surgical System. This is breakthrough surgical technology that allows surgeons to perform complex surgical procedures with the smallest of incisions. For most women, this offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery including less pain, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to normal daily activities. “As the fifth largest city in the United States, the Phoenix area does not yet have enough gynecologic oncologists to fill the need that exists for this type of treatment,” said Matthew Borst, M.D., Arizona Oncology gynecologic oncologist. “We are thrilled to have Dr. Wingo on board, not only to meet this need, but to further address the specific issues experienced by women fighting these types of cancers. As oncologists who specialize in treating gynecologic cancers, we are not only skilled surgeons capable of performing wide-ranging cancer operations, we are also trained in prescribing appropriate chemotherapy and we work with Dr. Jerry Lucas, our onsite radiation oncologist, when radiation therapy is warranted. In addition, we are frequently involved in research studies and clinical trials aimed at finding more effective and less toxic treatments.”

Dr. Wingo’s practice is located at Arizona Oncology’s new offices at the Biltmore Medical Mall, 2222 Highland Ave., Suite 400, Phoenix. Appointments can be scheduled at 602-253-5300.
