Arizona Oncology’s Dr. Wingo Becomes West Valley’s First Female Gynecologic Oncologist
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Feb. 14, 2012) – Shana Wingo, M.D., Arizona Oncology, has become the first female gynecologic oncologist to practice in the West Valley. She is one of fewer than 1,500 gynecologic oncologists in the United States who specifically treat cervical, endometrial, ovarian, uterine and vulvar cancer. Arizona Oncology, which treats more patients with cancer than any other healthcare provider in the state, includes seven gynecologic oncologists, four of whom practice in the Phoenix metropolitan area and serve Northern Arizona. Dr. Wingo is currently performing surgeries at Banner Thunderbird Medical Center, as well as other hospitals Valleywide.
Dr. Wingo earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and continued there to complete an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency, as well as a Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship. She is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in OB/GYN and is a member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Wingo has published on a variety of gynecologic malignancies with an emphasis on cervical cancer.
Dr. Wingo and her colleagues provide advanced and comprehensive gynecologic cancer care as part of Arizona Oncology. This practice is affiliated with The US Oncology Network, one of nation’s largest community-based cancer treatment and research networks. Through this affiliation, patients can access the latest treatments, in-house laboratory services, chemotherapy and radiation, a staff pharmacist, state-of-the-art technology and cutting-edge nationwide clinical trials. US Oncology Research, part of suite of business opportunities available through The US Oncology Network, has played a role in the development of 43 cancer-fighting drugs approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
According to the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation, women diagnosed with a reproductive cancer, especially ovarian and uterine (endometrial) cancers, experience improved outcomes when treated first by a gynecologic oncologist. Gynecologic oncologists’ advanced surgical skills, coupled with targeted and personalized chemotherapy, aggressive surgery and access to clinical trials ensure the best chance of survival.
“Gynecologic cancers and related treatments make a significant impact in nearly every area of a woman’s life,” said Dr. Wingo. “I strive to balance my clinical expertise with compassion, respect and emotional support for my patients and their family members.”
In addition to Dr. Wingo, other Arizona Oncology Phoenix-area gynecologic oncologists include Snehal Bhoola, M.D. (East Valley), Matthew Borst, M.D. (Phoenix) and Mike Janicek, M.D. (Scottsdale). They each perform minimally invasive surgeries using the da Vinci® Robot-assisted Surgical System. This is breakthrough surgical technology that allows surgeons to perform complex surgical procedures with the smallest of incisions. For most women, this offers numerous benefits over traditional open surgery including less pain, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to normal daily activities.
