It’s World Cancer Day, a global event recognized every Feb. 4. You might ask what World Cancer Day is and why is it important.
As explained by the Arizona Oncology Foundation, World Cancer Day is an annual, global event aimed at uniting the world in the fight against cancer. This day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and educating about cancer conditions, and pressing governments and individuals everywhere to take action.
Because everyone can help in the fight against cancer, worldcancerday.org has adopted the theme ‘We can. I can.’ World Cancer Day between 2016 and 2018 will explore how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – and do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.
According to worldcancerday.org, “Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways; all people have the power to take various actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities.”
World Cancer day is a chance to reflect on what you can do, make a pledge and take action through the theme ‘We can. I can.’
Dr. Tania Cortas, of Arizona Oncology, said the theme is fitting to an important cause facing the world.
“In reality, we can all make a difference in raising awareness and fighting cancer” she said. “This isn’t just about the doctor treating patients and helping them beat cancer. It’s about friends and family showing support. It’s about those who donate towards the cause as research continues to move towards finding a cure. It’s about other organizations standing up and lending a helping hand, whether it be through support groups or finding technology to help speed up hair regrowth. A small gesture, or a big contribution makes a difference. I can’t think of any better theme, and I can’t think of anything better than taking ‘We can. I can.’ past 2016 and into many years to come.”
