Arizona Oncology’s Radiation Center in Tucson Named as Savi Center of Excellence

Luncheon planned to honor Dr. Croghan, as well as first

25 patients to receive SAVI treatment for breast cancer

WHAT: Arizona Oncology’s Tucson radiation oncology has been recognized as a SAVI Center of Excellence. Marilyn Croghan, M.D. will be recognized for this achievement at a special luncheon honoring the first 25 Tucson-area breast cancer patients who have received breast brachytherapy using the SAVITMapplicator.

Many women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer have the option to save their breast by choosing breast conservation therapy. Breast brachytherapy using the SAVITMapplicator is an innovative form of internal radiation treatment that uses a radioactive source that is placed inside the body. High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy is precisely delivered directly into the space left when the tumor was removed. The radiation is targeted to the area where the cancer is most likely to recur. While traditional external radiation therapy may take up to seven weeks to deliver, the SAVITM applicator allows treatment time to be shortened to one week. The new SAVITM catheter is much easier to use and will allow many more patients with early stage disease the opportunity to receive breast brachytherapy.

Arizona Oncology treats more patients than any other cancer care provider in the state. Its Phoenix radiation oncology division was named as a SAVI Center of Excellence in 2010.
